Day 35: Aunt Mary and Watermelon Rind Painting

July 4
We went to visit my Great Aunt Mary this morning. She's going to be 90 soon! She looked fantastic and we had a wonderful time! They grilled out for us and we had hot dogs, potato salad, beans, corn, and hot dog flavored potato chips! They bought 4th of July cupcakes as well. The best part, though, was when Aunt Mary said, "Oh! I almost forgot about the cake I made! Now I don't know how it's going to taste, but we'll see." She "created" a new cake. Seriously- she just put a bunch of stuff together that included some fruit cocktail. Now you might think to yourself that this is a nearly 90 year old woman who put a bunch of stuff together and made a cake with it and you may not touch it. But you don't know my Aunt Mary. I'm not a fan of new things, but I happily dug into that cake and let me tell you, it was amazing! She's always been talented in the kitchen and she has a heart of gold, truly. Love her.

Helping Aunt Patsy start the grill.

Of course, AFTER we headed home I wished I had gotten Aunt Mary in this picture! Oh well. We'll be back :)
When we got home we did some laundry- starting Grayson early on his lessons ;)
And next he had drum lessons with Daddy!

Isaac has turned into a watermelon loving fool! I won't be surprised if he turns into a watermelon.
After cutting up the watermelon I realized that there was a lot of rind left over and I was SURE there was something that could be done with it. And there was! In fact, there's a whole website dedicated to watermelon rind. It's kind of creepy crazy. But anyway, there's lot on Pinterest too, including painting with the rind which I thought would be perfect! Of course, I was the only one who followed the directions.
See? I made fun pictures, all made from watermelon rind! (I cut some into rainbow shapes, but figured my kids would like shapes too, so I made squares and circles and triangles as well.)
 This is Jared's
And this is Isaac's. Neither of them used watermelon rinds to paint with. I just want you to know, that I pulled this idea from a blog of a mom of a 4 year old and 2 year old daughters. They made these beautiful and adorable rainbows with their watermelon rinds. She has girls. I have boys. My boys had just as much fun though and that's what matters :) I did think it was funny!

To be fair, Isaac did play with the watermelon rind. Here he is, getting ready to throw it into the water...
and fishing it back out to do it again. ;)
Since we were out late last night seeing fireworks, we decided to stay close to home. We heard that you can see fireworks in the back of our neighborhood, so we headed on back.
There was a little girl there that the boys played with.

The fireworks last night were actually better, so we'll be heading there again next year for sure!
The boys in their matching 4th of July shirts! (Thanks to our cousin, Jennifer!)

I took this picture today as well and had to post it. Chubby feet :)
